I CAN'T FIND WHERE I'M HIDING
I CAN'T FIND WHERE I'M HIDING
Humans fortify ourselves against the vastness of Being by simplifying, reducing, and compartmentalizing. These behaviors create cognitive horse blinders. There is chaos in the limitlessness of possibility. And we work to nestle ourselves in the comfort of predictability. It is our own manufactured ignorance that allows us to maintain the delusion that anything can be truly predicted, perceived, and understood. Art threatens to unravel the veil.
Contemporary culture has a fractured relationship with art. We treat art like haunted heirlooms, possessing the innocent with radical ideas. And museums are our supermax prisons. We incarcerate art in glass cases, marble-walled mazes, and ornate frames to ensure that it remains tethered in place, unable to escape into the world where its power can not be so easily contained.
People box artists too - in categories: as painters, actors, or singers - so that they may be more easily contained. But, in between drawing and painting, Da Vinci was learning to fly.
